Drone Flights Banned

Greece has imposed temporary restrictions on the operation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over several islands in the southeastern Aegean Sea.

Sea-news.az reports that several temporarily restricted airspace zones have been designated in connection with the measure.

The restrictions mainly cover the islands of Karpathos and Kasos, as well as the nearby smaller islands of Saria and Armathia. The ban will remain in effect daily from 07:00 to 19:00 until October 31.

Under the decision, the areas of Olympos, Aperi and Arkasa on Karpathos, the entire territory of Kasos, as well as the airspace around the airports of both islands, have been designated as special control zones.

The restrictions apply to airspace up to approximately 122 metres above ground level. This altitude corresponds to the maximum limit established for flights by ordinary civilian drones.

Official notices do not specify which particular operation prompted the restrictions. However, taking into account the strategic location of the islands and the nature of the restrictions, Greek media outlets speculate that the decision may be related to military exercises or border-control operations.

According to the information available, flights conducted by the relevant state authorities will be continuously coordinated with the Athens air traffic control service. If necessary for flight safety, such operations may also be immediately suspended.
