Iran threatens a complete blockade of the Strait of Hormuz in response to U.S. sanctions

Iran has warned that it could implement a full-scale maritime blockade of the Strait of Hormuz in response to severe economic sanctions and financial isolation measures imposed by the United States.

Sea-news.az reports that Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, made the statement. In a social media post, he noted that Washington’s economic pressure campaign against Tehran would not go unanswered and could be met with the establishment of a broad maritime exclusion zone originating from the Persian Gulf. Rezaei also emphasized that operational strategies targeting U.S. warplanes, naval vessels, and base infrastructure in the region are currently under review.

For its part, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared that Tehran reserves the full right to take all necessary measures to safeguard its national security and economic interests against unilateral U.S. maritime restrictions and sanctions.

Recalling recent developments, Washington initiated a fresh wave of restrictive measures in August aimed at tightening the financial isolation of Iran. Furthermore, in early September, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Western efforts to intensify Tehran’s economic isolation are being closely coordinated, noting that the European Union has also joined the pressure campaign. Analysts warn that this escalating economic and military friction is exerting profound pressures on vital global energy corridors.
