North Korea commissions new “Choe Hyon”-class destroyer Kang Gon

North Korea has officially commissioned its new Choe Hyon-class destroyer, named the Kang Gon.

Sea-news.az reports that the announcement was released by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The commissioning ceremony took place at the port of Wonsan, with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in attendance. Following the official handover, Kim boarded the destroyer, inspected its combat quarters, and met with the crew.

The vessel has been assigned to the North Korean Navy’s East Fleet.

Kim Jong Un stated that the warship will form an integral part of the country’s nuclear deterrence and retaliation system, capable of delivering a devastating blow to adversaries if orders are given.

The Kang Gon is the second vessel of the Choe Hyon class. According to the KCNA, it features integrated combat capabilities and is designed to execute operational missions across diverse maritime environments.

Notably, the ship previously suffered a major accident last year: during its ceremonial launch, the vessel partially capsized. The North Korean leader severely denounced the incident as “criminal negligence,” prompting authorities to detain three officials in connection with the mishap.
