Tropical Storm Karina has strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane in the Pacific Ocean, with forecasters warning it could intensify into a Category 3 storm this week.

Sea-news.az reports that the information was released by the US National Hurricane Center.

Karina’s maximum sustained winds have reached 80 mph (130 km/h), qualifying it as a Category 1 hurricane. The storm is currently located about 820 miles (1,325 kilometers) southwest of the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, moving northwest at 15 mph (24 km/h) toward the open waters of the Pacific.

While Karina is expected to remain far from land, the Hurricane Center has warned that swells generated by the storm could cause hazardous surf conditions and strong rip currents along parts of Mexico’s southwestern coast and the Baja California Peninsula.
