Today marks the anniversary of the Balligaya massacre—a brutal and heinous crime perpetrated by Armenian terrorist-bandit formations that has gone down in history as a tragic bloodbath.
Sea-news.az reports that 34 years have passed since this massacre was committed against Azerbaijani civilians by the armed forces of Armenia.
The tragedy, remembered in history as the Balligaya massacre, took place on the morning of August 28, 1992, at around 5:00 AM in the village of Balligaya, located in the Goranboy district.
As a result of the massacre, 24 Azerbaijani civilians were ruthlessly murdered, including six children—among them a 6-month-old infant—and a 93-year-old elderly woman. The bodies of several victims, the majority of whom were children, women, and the elderly, were burned. Three young children lost both parents in the attack.
The Balligaya massacre is part of a series of mass slaughter acts systematically committed by the Armenian armed forces with the intent to systematically destroy the Azerbaijani population of Karabakh, following similar atrocities in the village of Garadagli in Khojavand, the town of Khojaly, and the village of Agdaban in Kalbajar.
Following the occupation of Lachin in the summer of 1992, displaced local residents were forced to resettle in various regions of Azerbaijan. Six closely related families had settled in the Balligaya area due to its favorable conditions for animal husbandry. The Lachin district residents staying in tents in Balligaya that August had come there solely to continue their livelihood as herdsmen.
However, on the morning of August 28, a 10-to-12-member sabotage group from the Armenian army infiltrated the area and launched a vicious armed assault on defenseless, innocent people. Consequently, 24 unarmed civilians were brutally killed, and 9 others sustained severe injuries. All of the victims and wounded individuals were civilians engaged in animal husbandry—shepherds and members of their families.
