Anomalous heatwaves and prolonged drought

Severe drought has been recorded in 38 percent of the territories within the European Union.

Sea-news.az reports that the Euractiv publication released information about this.

According to the provided data, this figure encompasses 14.8% of agricultural land and 14.5% of forest masses. The natural disaster is felt more heavily in Western European countries primarily due to forest fires, extreme heat, and a scarcity of precipitation.

According to the publication, the current situation is causing severe damage to the livestock sector throughout the entire European Union. The drying up of pasturelands and the destruction of forage crops have forced agricultural workers to utilize reserves intended for the winter.

Along with the olive oil and wine industries, many different sectors have been negatively affected, including the cultivation of important feed products such as corn and sunflower.

Let us recall that on August 10, the German magazine Spiegel emphasized that the severe weather conditions covering most of Europe in the summer of the current year could completely cancel out the economic growth planned by the EU for 2026.

Problems arising in the economy as a result of extreme heat could pull back the European Union’s gross domestic product by approximately 1%. This represents a financial loss of roughly 180 billion euros. Meanwhile, the primary factor causing a 0.6% decline in GDP is cited as the drop in labor productivity of workers.
