July 28 is celebrated as World Hepatitis Day by the decision of the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to sea-news.az that the main purpose of this day is to raise public awareness about viral hepatitis and highlight the importance of disease prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment. This date coincides with the birthday of Baruch Blumberg, the scientist awarded the Nobel Prize for discovering the hepatitis B virus.

Experts state that hepatitis is an inflammatory disease of the liver, most commonly associated with viruses A, B, C, D, and E. In particular, hepatitis B and C can develop without symptoms for a long time, leading to severe complications such as cirrhosis and liver cancer. In accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals signed by UN member states, reducing the number of hepatitis infections by 90 percent by 2030 has been chosen as a key target.

Important measures are also being taken in our country in the field of examination and treatment of hepatitis. Since 2014, a special commission for the organization of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of hepatitis has been operating under the Ministry of Health of Azerbaijan, providing patients with free medication and treatment.
