The Future of the Caspian

Scientific research on the Caspian Sea continues at the Institute of Geography of the Ministry of Science and Education. Currently, studies on the fluctuations in the sea level and their ecological as well as socio-economic consequences have intensified.

According to sea-news.az that this information was provided by the Institute of Geography.

It was noted that in order to evaluate the results of the research, monitoring is carried out annually in the northern, central, and southern parts of the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea. The observations allow for tracking the dynamics of changes occurring in the sea and identifying their potential impacts.

According to experts, the decline in the sea level primarily has a negative impact on the ecosystem. The weakening of vegetation in the water basin and the limitation of the food base for fish can adversely affect biodiversity and lead to more serious ecological problems in the future.

Based on the observations, the drop in sea level also significantly affects economic sectors. The shallowing of port areas complicates the safe movement and docking of vessels, and negatively impacts the operations of coastal oil terminals, pipelines, trestles, and other infrastructure facilities. In addition, the risk of economic losses in coastal tourism and maritime industries is increasing.

The goal of the research conducted at the Institute is to evaluate the changes occurring in the Caspian Sea on a scientific basis, identify potential risks, and provide scientific support for the development of measures to mitigate their impacts.
