Kenyan authorities and rescue teams are continuing preparations to refloat the Tanzanian-flagged cargo ship “MV Dan,” which has been grounded near the country’s Nyali Beach for six weeks.

According to sea-news.az the vessel, built in 1985 with a deadweight of 4,900 tons and owned by a Turkish company, ran aground in Kenyan waters on May 17 while traveling from the port of Tanga, Tanzania. Although the incident raised concerns regarding potential environmental impact, the Kenya Maritime Authority stated that inspections revealed no damage to the ship’s hull or any fuel leaks.

According to the agency, the risk of pollution is currently assessed as minimal, but precautionary measures are ongoing, and the Kenya Coast Guard is monitoring the vessel 24 hours a day.

The ship’s owner, “SLM Maritime,” in cooperation with Kenyan officials, plans to refloat the vessel during the next favorable high tide, around July 13.

The operation is expected to be carried out with extreme caution, as the site is located near the Mombasa Marine National Park and a sensitive marine ecosystem rich in protected coral reefs.

The “MV Dan” received a number of deficiencies related to navigation safety, fire safety, watertight doors, and certificates during a port state control inspection held in Slovenia in 2025.
