The UN International Maritime Organization (IMO) has announced that it will begin the evacuation of more than 11,000 seafarers stranded in the Gulf region due to the military conflict that occurred between the US and Iran.

According to sea-news.az a formal statement on this matter was made by IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez.

The Secretary-General expressed his deep satisfaction with the peace agreement reached between the US and Iran, hailing it as a decisive step toward restoring maritime security. Paying tribute to the memory of the 14 innocent seafarers who lost their lives during the months-long crisis, he noted that a large-scale operation has been launched to rescue the crew members currently remaining at sea.

According to Arsenio Dominguez, this massive humanitarian and logistical operation will be executed in close coordination with Iran, Oman, other coastal states of the region, the US, and representatives of the international maritime industry.

The statement emphasized that all necessary safety guarantees have already been secured for the safe implementation of the evacuation plan, and safe navigation conditions in the region have been comprehensively verified. The IMO pointed out that it has mobilized all its capabilities to fully ensure the safety of seafarers and the uninterrupted continuation of global trade.

It is worth recalling that the military-political crisis and the blockade of sea routes that arose around the Strait of Hormuz caused thousands of vessels to become trapped inside the Gulf aquatory, leading to severe humanitarian tension in the maritime transport sector.
