The European Union has made a new financial commitment of 338.35 million euros for ocean protection, sustainable fisheries, and strengthening maritime security within the framework of the “Our Ocean Conference 2026” held in Mombasa, Kenya.

According to sea-news.az the EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, stated that the allocated funds will be directed toward ensuring safe, clean, healthy, and sustainably managed oceans on a global level. Held under the slogan “Our Ocean, Our Heritage, Our Future,” the conference fosters global cooperation by bringing together governments, civil society, and industry representatives. This approach also aligns with the European Commission’s newly adopted Coastal Communities Strategy.

Within the framework of the financial package, the EU intends to strengthen ocean observation systems and support science-based decisions in maritime policy. Along with this, enhancing maritime security, combating piracy, and addressing hazardous shipping situations in southern Somalia, the Horn of Africa, and the Gulf of Aden are also among the priority areas. The funds will additionally be directed toward developing a sustainable blue economy in African countries, combating illegal fishing, reducing ocean pollution, and restoring damaged ecosystems. The new financial commitment also covers the expansion of marine protected areas and scientific research into deep-sea biodiversity.
