According to Iranian officials, five seafarers are missing and ten others have been injured following an alleged US strike on an Iranian cargo vessel near the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman on Thursday.

The Mehr news agency reported that Mohammad Radmehr, governor of Iran’s southern Minab province, stated that a civilian cargo ship belonging to the Kolahi district was targeted by US military forces in an area close to a strategic shipping route. He added that a fire broke out on board after the strike.

The governor said there were 15 crew members on the vessel at the time of the incident. The injured have been taken to hospital, while search operations for the missing continue.

The incident comes days after Iranian media reported that the US Navy had targeted missile boats belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran claims those vessels were civilian fishing and cargo ships.
