Two oil tankers caught fire after striking sea mines while attempting to navigate the Strait of Hormuz via unapproved transit corridors.
Sea-news.az reports citing Al Jazeera, that the details were confirmed in an official statement issued by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
According to Iranian claims, one of the tankers was positioned in the eastern approaches of the strait, while the second was navigating directly within the narrow body of water. Both vessels came to a complete halt following the explosions.
“These two tankers had disabled all onboard navigation and automated identification systems (AIS) to attempt passage under the support of US military forces. Their movement ceased entirely after striking naval mines,” the IRGC statement read.
The IRGC reiterated that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until seven core demands conveyed to Washington are satisfied. The Guard Corps further asserted that US military attempts to escort commercial tankers through unauthorized and mined maritime sectors will continue to fail.
