Fifty-nine years ago, on November 6, a major milestone in Baku’s transport history occurred with the official opening of the Baku Metro.
Sea-news.az reviews the 59-year track record of “Baku Metro” JSC on the occasion of Metro Workers’ Professional Day.
The initial launch segment of Phase 1 covered 10.1 kilometers and included what are today known as Icherisheher, Sahil, 28 May, Ganjlik, Narimanov, and Khatai stations. The first five stations opened on November 6, 1967, while Khatai followed on February 22, 1968.
Development Stages of the Baku Metro
Politically and historically, the expansion of the Baku Metro spans three key eras: Pre-Heydar Aliyev, the Heydar Aliyev Era, and the Ilham Aliyev Era. Following the political and economic revitalization under National Leader Heydar Aliyev, President Ilham Aliyev charted a modern development strategy for the network. Between 2008 and 2011, Nasimi, Azadliq Prospekti, and Darnagul stations were commissioned, guided by the “Conceptual Development Scheme of Baku Metro Lines” approved in March 2011.
Line Separation and Expansion Plans to 2040
By 2027, the separation of the Green and Red lines at the “28 May” – “Jafar Jabbarli” junction is scheduled for completion alongside supporting infrastructure upgrades.
Long-term master planning projects that by 2040, total track length will expand from the current 36.6 kilometers to 73.4 kilometers, while the number of stations will grow from 25 to 46, more than doubling the existing grid.
Modernization of Rolling Stock
To lower headways and elevate passenger safety, the fleet is actively integrating 4th-generation trainsets. Under recent procurement agreements, 10 new-generation modern carriages (comprising two five-car trainsets) are being delivered and assembled for deployment during the current year.
