The oil spill from the tanker Gem No. 2 off the coast of the UAE has been halted, with no new leakages detected as cleanup operations continue across affected coastal areas.
Sea-news.az reports citing The Times of Israel, which referenced the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment.
According to the ministry, the slick originated near the northern emirate of Umm Al Quwain and drifted partially toward the shorelines of neighboring northern emirates, including Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman, and Sharjah.
The ministry noted that the concentration of marine oil pollution has decreased significantly.
As a precautionary measure, authorities have temporarily closed select beaches and coastal zones. However, the ministry emphasized that the closures do not imply that contamination was confirmed at every restricted site.
While authorities have not officially disclosed the cause of the spill, Reuters sources within the maritime industry reported that the breach likely stemmed from a projectile strike on October 9, which ignited an onboard fire that was subsequently extinguished.
