Sewage water was discharged into the Danube River in the Hungarian capital of Budapest over the course of several days.

Sea-news.az reports that the contamination was detected on October 21 in the city’s 3rd district, near the entrance to Hajógyári Island, in the vicinity of Bridge K on Mozaik Street.

According to eyewitnesses, turbid water with a sharp sewage odor poured from a drainage outlet directly into the river. Preliminary estimates suggest that several dozen liters of wastewater were entering the river per second.

Residents reported the incident to the utility company responsible for Budapest’s sewerage network. Company personnel inspected the area and successfully stemmed the leak. However, the precise cause of the pollution has yet to be determined. Experts indicate that a damaged sewer line or improper commercial connections to the public network may be to blame.

Specialists note that untreated wastewater can carry various pathogens. The actual public health risks associated with the event have not yet been evaluated, and an investigation remains ongoing.
