Secret of the Titanic Sinking Revealed: New Facts

Despite more than a century having passed since the tragedy of the legendary “Titanic”, advanced technology and a unique 3D digital scan of the wreckage have unveiled several true facts surrounding the disaster.

Sea-news.az reports that a high-definition model created from over 700,000 photos captured by submersibles at a depth of approximately 3,800 meters has allowed researchers to re-examine the details of the famous shipwreck.

Narrow Gaps Rather Than a Single Fatal Hole

Conducted research indicates that the iceberg did not create a single massive hole in the ship’s hull. The impact against the hull resulted in several narrow, minor tears. However, seawater simultaneously flooded six compartments. The liner had been engineered to withstand the flooding of only four compartments. The exceeding number of compromised sections, along with low-quality rivets holding the hull together (which became brittle in icy water), rendered the disaster inevitable.

Ship Split in Two Above the Water

The 3D scanning project has also settled the long-standing debate over whether the “Titanic” broke apart on the surface or underwater. The model demonstrated that the ship split into two while still on the surface due to extreme structural strain created as the stern lifted nearly vertically. Furthermore, a sudden pressure drop caused by icy water rushing into the boiler rooms knocked the boilers from their mountings, accelerating the rate of sinking.

Engineers and Crew Remained at Their Posts Until the Final Seconds

Among the most poignant findings is that the ship’s power generation system remained operational until the final moments. The fact that deck lights remained illuminated while the bow submerged proves that engineers, electricians, and stokers worked at their posts until the very last second. It was precisely through their dedication that radio communications remained active, distress signals were transmitted, and hundreds of passengers gained a chance to reach survival craft.

Experts note that iron-eating bacteria and the passage of time are causing the legendary ship to gradually vanish, making such digital twins the sole enduring record of its existence for future generations.
