A Panama-flagged cargo ship carrying a Chinese crew has sunk in the Bay of Bengal, approximately 240 nautical miles off the port of Paradip in India’s eastern Odisha state.
Sea-news.az reports citing information from the PTI agency, that there were 24 crew members aboard the vessel. The ship was en route from Odisha to Singapore carrying a cargo of iron ore. After entering the port of Paradip on August 20, it subsequently resumed its voyage.
Following the incident, the Indian Coast Guard and Navy launched a search and rescue operation. Other vessels in the area have also been alerted and requested to assist with the rescue efforts.
A local police representative told the agency that authorities are still working to determine how many people have been rescued.
“We do not yet know the exact number of crew members rescued,” the official stated, adding that the majority of the sailors are Chinese nationals.
