A serious threat to critical energy infrastructure has been thwarted in the Black Sea basin. An F-16 fighter jet belonging to the Romanian Air Force has destroyed an explosive-laden sea drone near a strategic gas field located within the country’s exclusive economic zone.
Sea-news.az reports that acting Romanian Defense Minister Radu Mirutse issued an official statement on his social media account. The marine drone was detected by the Romanian Coast Guard 80 miles off the port of Constanta, within the perimeter of the Neptun Deep gas field located in the exclusive economic zone.
The unmanned vessel was identified just a few hundred meters away from the active gas extraction facilities. Upon spotting the threat, two F-16 fighter jets were immediately scrambled to ensure the safety of platform workers and protect the strategic asset, successfully shooting down and neutralizing the sea drone.
