Photography allows us to immortalize passing events, interesting moments, beautiful landscapes, loved ones, and experiences that will never repeat. Thanks to photographs, we can return to the past and remember many wonderful moments of our lives as we look at them. Moreover, for some, photography is not just a hobby, but a profession. Therefore, it is no surprise that this field has its own special celebration—World Photography Day.
Sea-news.az reports that both amateur and professional photographers, as well as fans of this art form, celebrate this day every year on August 19. World Photography Day was established in 2009 on the initiative of Australian photographer Korske Ara.
The reason this day falls on August 19 is that on this day in 1839, the daguerreotype—considered the earliest form of photography—was presented to the general public. This invention belongs to the French artist Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre. The French government purchased the patent for this promising innovation and declared its invention a “gift to the world.” J.L. Daguerre’s invention was one of the first steps toward making photography a technology accessible to everyone.
Photography, which has firmly established itself in almost all areas of our lives today, has a long history. Daguerreotypy—the process of obtaining an image on a metal plate—is considered the first practical method of taking photographs. More precisely, the process of capturing and fixing an image was created in the early 1820s by the French inventor Joseph Nicéphore Niépce. However, the process was named after Louis Daguerre in honor of his achievement in successfully obtaining and fixing an image on a copper plate. Therefore, daguerreotypy is considered the foundation of modern photography.
In subsequent years, many scientists continued to improve the process of obtaining photographs using various materials and chemical substances. In 1861, James Maxwell succeeded in obtaining a color photograph. In 1981, Sony’s invention of the digital camera enabled the capture of digital photos and paved the way for moving away from traditional photographic film. Nevertheless, many professional photographers still prefer film in their work today. In the era of digital technology, each of us can easily immortalize moments that later bring a smile to our faces, make us emotional, or amaze us.
Naturally, this art holds a special place in the lives of those who choose photography as a profession, and their labor can rightly be called art. Therefore, today is a great opportunity to congratulate all photographers on their professional holiday.
Experts also note that photography holds special significance in the modern world. Photography not only provides aesthetic pleasure but also helps preserve important moments in history and is applied in various fields of industry and science. Consequently, initiatives aimed at supporting and developing photography communities globally and in individual countries are welcomed.
Overall, World Photography Day is a holiday for everyone who loves taking and being in photos, making it a vibrant and positive occasion. Today, anyone can pick up a photography tool to capture memorable moments and beautiful scenes, stepping into this fascinating world.
