Swedish company Oceanbird has successfully completed the installation and sea trials of the first wing sail prototype designed for commercial vessels.

According to sea-news.az citing Seanews.az, the “Wing560” system was installed on the Tirranna, a 230-meter-long vehicle carrier owned by Wallenius Wilhelmsen, at the Damen Shipyard in Rotterdam.

The vessel has embarked on its first voyage with the new system and has successfully completed both port and sea acceptance trials.

Standing 46 meters tall and 14 meters wide, the rigid wing sail utilizes wind energy to provide propulsion support to the ship, thereby helping to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The company will soon analyze data collected from the vessel to evaluate the system’s efficiency under real operating conditions.

The installation project has been certified by DNV.
