The captain of an international cruise ship flying the flag of the Bahamas has been detained following an incident at the port of Corfu, Greece.

According to sea-news.az citing Seanews.az, the incident occurred when strong winds caused the mooring lines securing the ship to the pier to snap while passengers were returning to the vessel from the shore. Following the breakage of the lines, the gangway shifted, causing a 56-year-old New Zealand female passenger to lose her balance and fall into the sea.

Thanks to the swift intervention of the crew and port workers, the woman was pulled from the water. She sustained minor injuries to her face and body and was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

The 56-year-old Italian captain has been detained as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident. He is being investigated on charges of endangering a passenger’s life and failure to fulfill the statutory duty of care.

Despite the incident, the cruise ship has continued its voyage. The Central Port Authority of Corfu is conducting the investigation into the matter.
