Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister Oljas Bektenov has called on Caspian littoral states to strengthen cooperation in the fight against the decline in sea levels, Report informs, citing the Prime Minister’s press service.

“Since the early 2000s, a trend of decreasing Caspian Sea levels has been observed. The Caspian Sea Scientific Research Institute has been established in Kazakhstan to study this and other problems. Scientists’ forecasts are not encouraging. Decisive and coordinated action by all Caspian littoral states is needed to preserve this unique water basin,” Bektenov said at the first International Environmental Conference held in Altay city.

Among other priorities, Bektenov highlighted the situation around the Aral Sea.

According to him, Kazakhstan, which leads the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, is implementing a number of projects to restore the ecosystem.

The prime minister explained that the Kokaral dam is being strengthened, support is being provided to the fishing industry, and greening work is being carried out on the dried-up bottom of the former sea.
