Türkiye raises fees for passage through Bosporus and Dardanelles

Starting July 1, Türkiye will increase the fees for ships passing through the Bosporus and Dardanelles by 15%, to $5.83, Türkiye’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloglu, said.

Report informs via NTV that the cost of passage through the Bosporus and Dardanelles straits is calculated based on the gold franc since the signing of the Montreux Convention in 1936, which regulates navigation in the straits zone. According to the convention, the fee charged to ships covers three items — sanitary inspection services, rescue services, and pilotage. These fees are calculated based on the ship’s net tonnage and are denominated in gold francs.

“This increase is very valuable in terms of supporting the sustainability of state services we provide in the Turkish Straits,” the minister said.

He added that through these fees, the government will continue improving the necessary infrastructure and vessel traffic monitoring systems to enhance environmental safety. The minister reminded that this will be the fourth increase since 2022.
