Saudi-based energy company ACWA Power is in the final stages of project documentation for the construction of a seawater desalination plant in Azerbaijan, aimed at producing potable water.

According to Report, speaking at the 30th Anniversary Baku Energy Forum, Polina Lyubomirova, ACWA Power’s Director of Business Development, emphasized the company’s commitment to being a comprehensive partner for Azerbaijan.

“For ACWA Power, it is extremely important to be present in Azerbaijan not only through energy projects but also by addressing the country’s broader needs, including water supply. One of our key initiatives is a seawater desalination plant. We were named the preferred bidder for the project in January this year and are now in the final stage of aligning all documentation with the government to move into the implementation and construction phase,” she said.

The project involves the construction of a desalination plant with a daily capacity of 300,000 cubic meters, located within the Sumgayit Chemical Industrial Park. It will be implemented by a consortium comprising ACWA Power and Turkish firm IC İçtaş İnşaat.

Under the terms of the agreement, the project will be developed over a 27.5-year period, after which the facility will be transferred to the State Water Resources Agency of Azerbaijan.

Construction is expected to be completed within 2.5 years.
