The dropping water level in the Caspian Sea is affecting cargo transportation, stated Tariyel Mirzayev, Deputy Chairman of the Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company (ASCO), Report informs.
Mirzayev made the remark at the round table titled “Middle Corridor: Connection through the Caspian Sea” held in Baku.
“In recent years, a drop in water depth has been observed in the ports and channels of the Caspian Sea. This decrease prevents ferries from operating at full capacity. The reduced water depth has diminished the throughput capacity of Ro-Pax ferries on the route between the Baku and Kuryk ports,” Mirzayev noted.
The official highlighted a 22% reduction in railway tanker transportation and a 10% decline in wagon transportation.
“A similar situation has arisen in the port of Turkmenbashi. The reduced water level has led to a decrease in the capacity of Ro-Pax ferries on the Baku-Turkmenbashi route. The transportation of railway tanks in this route has decreased by 37%, and the transportation of wagons by 19%,” the deputy chairman noted.
