Today, Director-General Dr. Taleh Ziyadov represented the Port of Baku at the United Nations High-Level Ocean of the Future Meeting in New York on the 79th session of the UN General Assembly. Invited by the UN Global Compact, the Port is proud to represent the Caspian Sea and Black Sea region in the Ocean Stewardship Coalition, emphasizing our commitment to ocean and sea sustainability.
During the meeting, our Port joined maritime leaders in signing a statement advocating for urgent action on maritime decarbonization and the adoption of zero and near-zero greenhouse gas fuels.
As the first public company from Azerbaijan to join the UN Global Compact in 2022 and the first port in the region to join the Ocean Stewardship Coalition, the Port of Baku is dedicated to promoting sustainable practices that enhance ocean health and global connectivity. This pioneering role underscores the Port’s commitment to sustainability and responsible stewardship of ocean and sea resources, particularly in the Caspian Sea, which plays a critical role in global biodiversity and economic development. After this significant event, the Port of Baku will participate in the UN Ocean Security Dialogues and the Annual Ocean Retreat hosted by the UN Global Compact in New York from September 23-25, 2024.
Established in 2021 as part of the UN Global Compact’s broader strategy to promote sustainable ocean business practices, the Ocean Stewardship Coalition now unites over 150 leading global businesses to amplify the impact of sustainable ocean practices.
The Coalition plays a vital role in shaping policy recommendations for the agendas of the UN General Assembly, UN Ocean Conference, COP, UN Biodiversity Conference, G20, and other high-level events focused on ocean sustainability.
