Iran sees significant increase in steel, sponge iron exports

    Trend:Over 16.073 million tons of crude steel was produced in Iran during the first nine months of the current fiscal year (March 20-Dec. 21, 2017).

    The figure shows a rise by 16 percent compared to the same period of last year, the Iranian Steel Producers Association said.

    Iranian steel producer companies also produced about 14.631 million tons of various steel products including beam, wide sheets, hot rolled sheets, galvanized steel and tubes during the 9-month period, indicating a rise by 9 percent compared to 13.446 million tons of products in the same period of the preceding year.

    Iran exported 4.614 million tons of crude steel (80 percent increase year-on-year) and 1.075 million tons of various steel products (29 percent fall) in the first nine months of current fiscal year.

    The country also imported 1.659 million tons of steel products in the 9-month period, 28 percent less year-on-year.

    Meanwhile 38,000 tons of crude steel was imported in the same nine months (79 percent fall).

    Based on a 2025 outlook, Iran’s steel output is to reach 55 million tons, 15 million of which should be exported. For the current Iranian year, it is predicted that Iran will produce 18 million tons of steel, exporting 6 million tons of it.

    Iran also produced 16.54 million tons of sponge iron in the 9-month period, 22 percent more year-on-year.

    The country’s overall sponge iron exports in the first nine months of the current fiscal year increased by 392 percent to 517,000 tons.

    According to the recent figures released by World Steel Association (WSA), Iran produced 20.5 million tons of sponge iron during 2017 accounting for 28 percent of total global output.
